Linda S. Costanzo received an A.B. in Chemistry from Duke University in 1969 and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the State University of New York in 1973. She was a postdoctoral fellow in Physiology at Cornell University Medical College from 1974-1979 under the direction of Erich E. Windhager. Dr. Costanzo joined the VCU faculty in 1981.

Teaching

Several years ago, I elected to devote the majority of my time to the education of professional and graduate students. In the School of Medicine, I direct the MI physiology and MII board review courses and serve on the Executive Admissions Committee, the Student Wellness Committee, the MD/PhD Steering Committee, Project Heart, and the Curriculum Council. As an extension of my teaching, I have authored books for medical students, including a didactic textbook, a board review book, and book of physiology cases and problems. I have been recognized for my teaching with the Virginia Commonwealth University Distinguished Teaching Award in 1992; the First Annual Arthur C. Guyton Physiology Teacher of the Year by the American Physiological Society in 1993; the First Annual School of Medicine Teaching Excellence Award in 1999; and the Alpha Omega Alpha, Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award by the Association of American Medical Colleges in 2004.

Research

My research involved the renal transport of Ca2+ at the level of the single nephron using in vivo micropuncture and microperfusion techniques. Major findings of my laboratory included descriptions of distal tubular Ca2+ and Na+ reabsorption and the effects of parathyroid hormone and thiazide diuretics. My laboratory was funded by the National Institutes of Health, and I was an Established Investigator of the American Heart Association. In 2000, one of our papers was selected by The American Society of Nephrology as a “Milestone in Nephrology (Am. J. Physiol. 235:F492-F506, 1978).”
