Steven Price received his B.A. in Biology in 1958 from Adelphi University and completed his studies in Biology at Princeton University (M.A. 1960, Ph.D. 1961). After two years of postdoctoral work in chemistry at Florida State University in the laboratory of Dr. Earl Frieden, Dr. Price worked for Monsanto Research Corporation for three years. He joined the department in 1966.
Teaching
Since closing his laboratory in 1995, he has been devoting much of his effort to an introductory physiology course (PHIS-206), in addition to which he teaches a graduate student seminar (PHIS-691), and participates in instructing first year medical students in physiology laboratory exercises. He has received the following teaching recognitions:
Outstanding Faculty Member, Department of Physiology (from Graduate Students), 1978
Scholar in Residence, VCU Honors Program, 1993-94
School of Medicine Outstanding Departmental Teacher Award, 1998-99
Research
Dr. Price's research was directed toward developing an understanding of receptor mechanisms in the chemical senses, taste and smell. Chemoreception is among the most primitive of cell properties and has been adapted to specialized sensory systems in vertebrates. The molecular basis of detection and recognition of stimulus chemicals in these systems includes specific receptor proteins as well as more or less nonspecific irritation of neurons. Although he no longer pursues research in a laboratory, he consults (formally and informally) and reviews manuscripts and grant applications. While active in research he received the recognitions listed below:
Predoctoral Fellowship, National Science Foundation, 1958-59
Predoctoral Fellowship, National Institutes of Health, 1960-61
Postdoctoral Fellowship, National Institutes of Health, 1961-63
Research Career Development Award, National Institutes of Health, 1972-76
NSF Panel to Assess Chemical Senses Research, 1977
NIH Panel on Chemical Senses Research, 1978
Guest Lecturer, USSR Academy of Sciences, 1979
International Union of Physiological Sciences Commission on Olfaction and Taste, 1979-85
Guest Scientist, Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Neurosciences, 1980
Vice-Chairman, Gordon Research Conference on Flavor and Odor, 1981
Commemorative Lecturer, Twentieth Annual Meeting, Japanese Association for the Study of Taste and Smell, 1985
Director, Sensory Physiology and Perception Program, National Science Foundation, 1987-88
Several NIH Special Study Sections
